2007 Melbourne Motor Show.

Category: Events
Subtitle: Some of the worlds best cars on display ,up close and personal
Keywords: 2007 Melbourne Motor Show
Summary: The Melbourne Motor show has been and gone for another year , leaving me with a feeling of longing , not to own those wonderful cars ,( well all right i would like to own some , ok ok most of those cars), but a longing to be able to see these splendid vehicles up close and at my leisure, to not have to fight your way through crowds of people just to get a glimpse of your favourite Marque to be able to take photographs without some one walking in front of you, as you stand obviously ready to take a snap.Wouldn't it be great if you had more time to ask questions of those manning the stands perhaps those at the exotic car stands could be a little more proactive with their display i know you cant have people climbing over $ 300-400 k vehicles but wouldn't it be great to have something to take home a brochure or a dvd , because lets face it not many of us will ever get to own one of these exotic marque's but we can all dream , full credit must go to the more affordable car manufacturers for the access they give the average punter , they know the value of building brand loyalty, giving youngsters stickers and posters generates future sales.

Amongst the cars on display at this years show were some great new models , Mitsubishi had the Ralliart lancer 220 on show with 220 kw and 395 nm of torque , as well as the Magna TWR 380 with the 3.8 litre V6 putting out 230 kw and 440 nm torque , the magna’s 0-100 time of 6 sec's and standing 400 mts time of 14 sec's are quite impressive, Audi had the new TT coupe on display which looks a hell of a lot better than the old one , to bad the same can’t be said of the BMW Z4 convertible however the Z4 coupe is another story, at this point i must admit that i am not a huge fan of the styling of the new BMW’S the M6 convertible is another exception what a stunner.

Honda’s latest Civic type R looks impressive as did the Honda FCX concept car on display, the car that made me stop in my tracks was the Lexus IS 250 with the custom mirror chrome paint job, complete with black chrome wheels and dark tinted windows
the little lexus looked fantastic, Mercedes had a huge stand because they needed to show not only their cars but a substantial collection of merchandise we all need to live the lifestyle i guess the CLS 500 and the SLK 200 were standouts.

GMH also had a large stand but with more cars and less merch , if your in the market for a luxury car look no further than the new Holden Grange it looks fabulous . you've no doubt heard the expression having a Damascus moment (when the mystery of the universe exposes itself to you ) well i had just such a moment when i saw the new camaro, i don't care about the engine or the transmission or whether it hammers or not though im sure it does but this is the most beautiful car i have seen come out of the american market it is a work of art it looks more like a sculpture or a monolith it is truly awesome , man would i love to own one, even those who could afford an exotic
must feel some faint tinge of jealousy as they check out the Camaro at the traffic lights.

Toyota had their latest additions to the hi po stakes on show in the guise of the Toyota Aurion TRD body styling and the supercharged 3.5 Litre engine producing approximately 230 Kw give the Aurion a phat fast look, the Toyota Hilux TRD runs a supercharged 4.0 litre V6 engine and should take the SUV market by storm.
The new Hyundai tiburon has come of age it no longer looks like a cheaper version of a japanese sports car but has distinct classy lines with a 2.7 Litre dohc engine producing 123 Kw @ 6000 rpm and generating 245 nm torque @ 4000 rpm, Ford as you would expect was well represented with some great cars. Subaru is also throwing more cars into the high performance ring with not only STI impreza’s but also an STI Liberty GT , Being a subaru fan i would definitely love to get my hands on one of those, Lastly what can one say about the exotics on show , other than wow , the Bentley Continental GTC was extreme with a 6 litre V12 capable of 411 Kw @ 6100 , the Ferrari's Lamborghini’s and Maserati's are all cars with a history of elegance and design and performance which makes them some of the most desired cars in the world and who would argue against that.

Congratulations and thanks to all the companies who again made it possible for Melbourne's motor enthusiasts to get close up with some of the best cars the world has to offer , not least the Australian built cars which must fit into the worlds best category ,
long live the Australian car industry.
Cheers Peter
