2007 20th annual picnic at hanging Rock

to much to look at and not enough time to look
Hanging Rock Victoria annual picnic

Hanging Rock!
Sunday 11-02-07 saw the running of the 20th annual picnic at Hanging rock, the picnic is unique in that it brings together automotive enthusiasts from every part of the spectrum , there are vintage cars , vintage commercial vehicles, Hot rods, Custom cars
Military Vehicles, Stationary engines and Production cars from all eras, sadly there did not seem to be many Motorcycles, this does not mean there was none there maybe i just did not get to see them.

The sheer number of vehicles on display is mind boggling, when you go to a display like this it makes you think about the popularity of the automotive scene and the large part it plays in the life and economy of not only Victoria but the whole of Australia , may be we should stand together more often to develop a say in some of the legislation that gets forced on us by governments, auto enthusiasts are surely a large part of our community, sorry about that i'll get of my soap box and back to the pic nic.

All day saturday i was expecting a fine warm sunday until sometime during saturday night i was woken by the sound of rain and quiet heavy rain at that although the rain was welcome i hoped it would not carry on through sunday , i woke to find a mainly clear sky breathed a sigh of relief and headed to hanging rock , as we got closer it seemed that the weather could go either way the sky was dark cool winds were blowing clouds past the rock in rather an erie a manner, then within an hour the sun was out and the day become quite warm , the organisers were unsure of the attendance figures fearing that the morning rain may have kept some people away but judging by the steady stream of display vehicles and spectators i would still call the day a success.

The kyneton Vehicle appreciation society had a wonderful display of early commercial vehicles including three b61 Mack's one of which was a heavy salvage unit an international r190 a Ford f500 and a diamond T, ron Stone was there with his 42 Studebaker complete with a beautiful example of a fergie tractor on the trailer behind his rig this is a well travelled and looks looks great. The Peter Brock commodore club were There with some great examples of these much sort after cars, one car drawing a lot of attention was Jim's Chevy nova ss complete with a blown 427 big block producing 818 hp @ 7 psi of boost and according to jim that figure is well under what the engine is capable of putting out but as jim said 818 hp is plenty for a street car.

Some other cars that caught my eye were a Gemini coupe with fuel injection , turbo , bone interior and 18’ inch wheels, a green1999 Rodeo low lux with purple interior lcd, nice big stereo , air bags and dubs . The shelby cobra club were busy putting a shine on some beautiful examples of the Marque, the guys from sunbury Auto barn had gathered together some fine modern high performance cars as well as a couple of rods and customs.

The picnic also has more than its share of vintage cars on display for instance George had his 1938 Cadillac Lasalle V8 convertible on display this car was imported from seattle in the US and is believed to be the only one of its kind in Australia , also i saw a very nice 1960 3.4 Litre Jaguar mkII complete with wire wheels, a 1950 Talbot ago sedan, I could go on for hours about the individual cars at the picnic, but if you love your motor vehicles, (of any type you would go a long way before you saw this much diversity), if you’ve never been to the picnic at hanging rock make a beeline for next years but get there early take plenty of film and you will have a great day.

Congratulations to the Macedon Ranges & District Motor club for another fine effort and well done to the entrants for displaying there cars and to all those who came along to look and admire , I will post some of my Photos in the events section of the gallery please feel free to browse the site and register to take part in the sites activities all contributions are welcome
Cheers Peter.
