Custom Pinups 2010 Calender launch
My son James and I took a run down to Kustom Lane Gallery for the Kustompinups 2010 Calender launch.
Having missed last years launch , and of course being told how good the event was add to that the fact that I had been wanting to get to the Gallery to check out the work by some serious Lowbrow Artists , we made the trip to Melbourne.
Kustom Lane Gallery is located in Luton Lane Hawthorn , we arrived early which gave us the chance to have a good look at the work on display ,whilst we were there they had work by ,Sarah Ray, Big toe , Max grundy , Paul , And of course a huge display of work by featured Artist and world renowned Pin striper Doug Dorr , Doug can be credited as being the originator of Kool Tools and greaser art , Doug has been around a long time , his work shows an enormous sense of fun , great use of colour and uses a mixture of materials and media , Paint , and pencils are used and can be found on anything from canvas to Crab shells , there is also his Kool Tools series , where Doug has taken ordinary workshop tools and turned them into works of art .
I was lucky enough to spend a few minutes talking with Doug Whilst he striped a Ukulele and let me say it was a pleasure Doug is a very warm and unassuming guy who is happy to talk about his work and share his knowledge .
The Official Calender launch Started at place at 2.00 pm , the Quality of the 2010 Calender is every bit as good as the 2009 Calender with a great selection of cars , (my favourite Being John Mesitis Chevrolet Belaire) , this car has the best chop I have seen , The Models are gorgeous and bring a real sense of the girl next door .
Samantha Doll and Maiki Larkins (art Direction , concepts etc.) have done a fantastic job using some great set ups for the shots . Allowing the photographer ( Koukei ) to make every shot a work of art . Natascha Verkaik's Make up brings out the natural beauty of the girls without ever cheapening the look .
The girls were dressed by Devil doll and the outfits range from cute to drop dead sexy , Devil doll ,Samantha doll and some of the other Models where on hand to sign autographs and to chat with , there was finger food and Drinks available at the bar , yes the Gallery has a bar how civilised ,and you had better believe that a lot of guy's and gals where keen to make use of that facility.
Late in the afternoon , The entertainment fired up in the form of the Rockin Rat Rods a Melbourne band consisting of a couple of young Japanese guy's on Dog house and Guitar and an Aussie on drums , they certainly did their best to liven up the Gallery for an appreciative audience .
As is always the case the time comes to leave , but one thing is for sure we will be going back to Kustom Lane in the near future to check out up and coming Exhibitions and certainly for next years Calender release , so a big shout out to Tony from Kustom Lane and to every one involved with the 20120 Calender release .
Cheers Peter.
